Monte Mario Natural Reserve Rome
Monte Mario Natural Reserve Rome
The natural reserve of Monte Mario, located in north-western part of Rome, it 's the most important among the hills called Monti della Farnesina.
The reserve is certainly a vital link between the environment of the Tiber and the large rural areas and because of its environmental characteristics it represents a true mosaic of biological diversity, rare in Rome.
The composition of the soil is sands and gravels of ancient origin which easily reconstructs the geological history of the area in which it appeared the city. Moreover, the Mediterranean vegetation in the lower areas (holm oak, cork and cistus) is opposite to the sub-mountain vegetation of the highest part ( hornbeam, linden, maple, orniello, stoned, privet and cornel). Man acting in the area disturbed the presence of an original fauna: today you can find rodents (moscardino, mouse house, wild mice) and bird (robin, blackbird, goldfinch, jackdaw).
The cultural and environmental value of the area is incalculable inside in are located some historical villas, including Villa Mazzanti, the seat of RomaNatura, and Villa Mellini, home of the famous astronomical observatory.
