Jewish District - Prague
The Jewish district (Josefov) extends between the Old City area, the Parizska street and the river. During the Middle Ages in Prague there were two Jewish communities, the one of the western Jews, and the one of the Jews from the Byzantine Empire, that in response to the growing discrimination, were forced to join together. Only after the period of the repression, with Joseph II, the Jews were recognized equal social and political rights. In 1850 the district was integrated in the Prague city, and in 1895 the city hall decided to redevelop the area, demolishing great part of the houses. The buildings that were not destroyed were 6 synagogues, the city hall, and the cemetery. The main synagogues of the Jewish district are three: the Old New Synagogue, the Klaus Synagogue, and the Pinkas one. Not far away from the Jewish district you can also find the Museum of Decorative Arts.
