Mala Strana - Prague

Mala Strana (“small part” in czech) is that area of the city from which in the 1300 the citizens moved to Nove Mesto (New City).  After the destruction of the original Mala Strana, following the Hussite wars and the fire of 1541, the area gained a new aspect thanks to the Italian artists and architects that settled within it.  The “new” Mala Strana was and is still characterized by a Renaissance and Baroque style.  No cars are allowed in the area and tourists rarely manage to find the most hidden sides of the district.  In the area you can find the Mala Strana Square, reachable from the Charles Bridge.  In its proximity there is also the Church of Saint Thomas, behind which is located the Wallenstein Palace (the biggest of Prague).  The Nerudova street, considered amongst the most beautiful of the city, leads from the Mala Strana Square to the Prague Castle.  Surmounting Mala Strana is the Petrin Hill, reachable with the funicular.  From the hill there is a magnificent view of the district and of the whole city.
