Charles Bridge - Prague
The Charles Bridge ( Karluv Most ) was built in 1357 under commission of Charles IV by the architect Petr Parler, who also did the Cathedral of Saint Vito and the Prague Castle. Planned in a gothic style, it took the place of the Judith Bridge (the first bridge of stone built on the Moldava). 515 meters long and 10 meters large, it connects the Old City with the Mala Strana area. Charles Bridge represents one of the most beautiful monuments of the city, and on it there are many street artists, musicians and souvenir sellers. At the extremities of the bridge, there are two towers, the Staromestska Vez (on the Old City side), and the Malostranska Vez (on the side of the Mala Strana). Since the XVII century, at the request of the Jesuits, 30 baroque statues of Saints were placed here, amongst which the one of saint john Nepomuceno (the martyr). The statues that you can admire today on the Charles Bridge are copies, whilst the original ones are kept in the Lapidarium. From the bridge you can also enjoy a wonderful view, especially at sunset.
Charles Bridge is one of the main sites of interest in Prague. Inside our Accommodations Search Engine you can get informations and maps of the Hotels in Malastrana and the Old City, near the Charles Bridge.
