Altes Museum and Neues Museum Berlin
Altes Museum and Neues Museum Berlin
Built in 1830 on commission of Frederick William III,
the Altes Museum boasts the title of the oldest museum within the Museuminsel, the Museum Island of the German capital,
situated in the Mitte district along the Sprea river.
The original name given to the Altes Museum was Konigliches, which means Royal Museum, and it was changed into Altes (old) once the Neues (New) museum was built.
Both the Altes and Neues Museums were seriously damaged during the second world war, but they have anyways remained two important symbols of the cultural and historical heritage of Germany.
The Neues Museum that is now being restored, will be reopened in 2009, with its famous Egyptian collection.
