Main Squares in Berlin
Platz der Vereinten Nationen Berlin
Platz der Vereinten Nationen Berlin
The square was known as Leninplatz until ’92, and thus, it was only after the fall of the Berlin Wall that it became the Platz der Vereinten Nationen.
Situated in the ex east Berlin, more precisely in the Friedrichshain district, it was built around the end of the sixties by the architects Henselmann and Mehlan.
At its center they placed the statue of Lenin, done by the sculptor Nikolai Tomski.
The movie Goodbye, Lenin! Recounts the moment in which the statue has been removed and replaced by a fountain.
Anyhow, presently the United Nations Square, other than representing a symbol of the Neue Berlin, is a fundamental site for the viability of Berlin, since the Landsberger Allee starts from it.
