Gendarmenmarkt Platz Berlin
Gendarmenmarkt Platz Berlin
Situated in the eastern side of the Mitte District, the Gendarmenmarkt Platz of Berlin
is included amongst the most beautiful squares of the German capital. Literally meaning
Market of the Gendarmes, the Square, characterized by an aesthetics that is definitely harmonious, hosts within it the twin cathedrals: the German cathedral and the French Cathedral.
Both built around the end of the XVII century, they demonstrated the liberal spirit of the city that was often a destination of foreigners that were persecuted in their country.
It seems that the name of the Square comes from the presence of the French gendarmes that stayed until 1773.
Within the Gendarmenmarkt Platz you can admire the statue of the famous German poet Schiller and the Konzerthaus.
The Square is very striking during the Christmas period because of the Christmas market it hosts.
