The Reichstag Berlin
The Reichstag Berlin
The Reichstag is with no doubt one of the most important historical monuments of the German capital.
It is, in fact, the former seat of the parliament, the Bundestag, and it has been since 1999, with the construction of the beautiful glass dome, icon of the rebirth of Berlin.
Situated in proximity of the Brandenburg Gate, for years, during the Cold War period, the Reichstag was flanked by the Berlin Wall, that separated it from the city center.
But its history begins from way before the existence of the wall.
Built at the end of the ‘800 and dedicated to the German population, the Reichstag was set on fire in 1933, during the Nazi period, and its fall symbolized the end of the democratic life in Germany.
Moreover, during World War II, the Reichstag was seriously damaged, and the image of the Red Army that positions its flag on its ruins, has remained one of the most famous.
The Reichstag is open to the public and it is reachable from the S-Bahn at the Unter den Linden stop.
